Construction of My Gingery Style Lathe

I like this option very much!  How about building the lathe bed out of steel tubing and bolting the ways to the top of the tubing?

Easier Gingery Lathe Bed Casting

Andy has come up with a different process for casting the bed when constructing a Gingery lathe.

From the nobugs website:

The bed casting for the gingery lathe is probably the most complicated casting in the book. Firstly, the pattern needs to be made carefully, otherwise the sand cores will lock in place. The sand mold weighs something like 40kg, and requires to be turned over several times. Finally, the casting requires a considerable amount of molten aluminum.

Building the Gingery Lathe

Dr. David B. Doman has built several machines from scratch.  He built a Gingery Milling machine after he built the lathe shown below:

One of the things I like about this particular project site is that he shows the wooden patterns used to create the sand molds which are then used to cast the metal parts.  Read more about it on his website .

Dans Home Built Gingery Lathe

Dave Gingery has a number of books that teach you how to build a complete home metalworking shop.  He starts with building a forge and goes into projects such as the lathe shown in this article.  Bill built this Gingery lathe over 10 years ago and documented the steps as it was going together.  Very nice job!

- Quick change table for vertical use
- Extension for cutting plate stock
